North Gwent Derby Day

RTB Steelers U10's played local rivals Abertillery this morning in a traditional fiesty encounter. However as a result of superb refereeing from Kristian Gay (Abertllery U11's), the game passed off without any unwanted disruption from either side.

On the field, the Steeler's looking smart in their new kit, showed the greater physicaility in the contact zone and soon edged in front on the scoreboard. The away side never gave up and kept in the game through good use of the ball and speed of thought.

The home side showed its class and commitment  to exert extreme pressure on the Abertillery outfit, Captain Charlie Birch, Josh Hathway, Max Gregory, Lewis Prendergast and Dylan Edwards led the way, supported by Leon Williams, Callum Rooker and the 'poacher' Josh Davies. Sometimes the energy of the home side proved to be over exuberent, resulting in penalties in favour of the opposition through over commitment to the ruck area or straying off side.

Still, a score of 45 points to 25 in favour of the Steelers was a fair reflection of the game. All credit to the visitors, the Steelers had only conceeded 3 tries in the month of September (9 games inclusive of the Newbridge tournament), the Tillery side breached the opposition line 5 times, that shows how good they are in the offensive side of the game.
As we both go forward, the talent of both clubs will be harnessed as part of a Blaenau Gwent schools set up and will provide a combined challenge to rival any district in Wales.
