Newbridge Festival

11/09/16

In sport, as in life, there are some days that you know are going to be harder than others.

Sometimes it would be easy to give it a miss and simply walk away from the challenge.

After a summer where training was often  disrupted by lack of numbers, on a day when the coaches had other commitments and at a tournament when the latest age grade rules kicked in there was every excuse not to attend.

In the event, despite losing each of the three games they played, the players of RTB under 12’s could hold their head’s high after  aday in which they performed remarkable feats.

The opposition agreed to slightly reduced team sizes. Each of the players had to play through all of the matches. There was no rest and no hiding place.

After heavy losses but meritorious performances against Mountain Ash and Newbridge, who went on to win the tournament, the final game was against a well drilled Blackwood side.

Throughout the day the forwards put in a fantastic shift with no lacking in either effort or commitment. The front row of props Declan Butler and Ethan Grisman stood up to opposition without a backward step. Hooker Andrew Lines had problems at the scrum earlier in the day but sorted it out as the tournament went on. Faultless effort from locks Noel Angwin and Harley Pitman took the game to the opposition time after time with penetrating runs showing great energy.

Amongst the backs there was some swapping and changing. Theo Harris was captain for the day and played really well in the centre. It was a shame that he had to sit out the second game as a result of a nasty injury bit showed real character to come back and shine in the last game. He was joined in the centre by Brandon Jones who stepped into the front row when necessary to support it.

Cairion Barton and George Evans swapped and changed position as necessary and both played really wherever they were asked to play. George in particular put in one crunching try saving tackle against Mountain Ash.

And so to the wings. Rhys Evans was magnificent in his first game putting his body on the line time after time. And finally Jack Thomas. He was everywhere and little went on anywhere on the field without his involvement. His try was scant reward but welcome in any event.

A message for the players. The second half of the Blackwood game showed what you could do. Outstanding rugby. Take that thought forward.

Thanks and congratulations to Rob Grisham for his first outings as ref. The Newbridge v Mountain Ash game was more of an exercise in riot control.

Lastly thanks to all the parents for the support on the day.
