Risca away

Whilst some mothers enjoyed being pampered with breakfast in bed and bunches of petrol station flowers, the more enlightened preferred to watch a fascinating match between two evenly matched teams at Risca.

In cold conditions but with good conditions under-foot a large pitch had been set up and there was some expectation of a high scoring match.

It was not to be. This was proper rugby as two teams went head to head and fought for the edge that would be necessary to win the game.

RTB’s had the better of the opening exchanges and soon ran in two tries converted by Mason Coughlin. It looked for some time that the conversions might be vital as Risca were less reliable with the boot. Risca got a try back in the first half and there then followed what can only be described as a fascinating tussle.

RT’s generally had the better of the play but Risca were generally quicker to the breakdown and frustrated the away side by taking the turnover ball. The RTB defence however stood firm and generally repelled the attacking play that followed.

The changed front row did well with Ethan, Andrew and Declan sharing the propping duties through most of the game. Good defence and rucking was shown by all 3 whilst Daniel S filled in for most of the game in the unfamiliar hooker role.

Noel and man of the match Harley again had strong games and the ever present Keiran at scrum half distributed well.

Among the backs Mason was, as usual, everywhere and popping up on the outside of the dancing Jack T whenever ground was made out wide. George carried well and Cairion and Joel supporting well. Stand out among the backs today however had to be Theo. His appetite for work is a lesson to any player.

On another day much more of the possession and territory might have been converted into tries but this was, nevertheless, a great game of rugby.

One try each in an attritional second half saw RTB’s finish as worthy winners of a match played in excellent spirit.

The law makers insist on trying to manufacture a sport with many more tries. That is a shame. To the true rugby supporter this was proper rugby. In the words of one of the coaches “Bish-Bash” and sometimes that is no bad thing

Final score Risca 12 (2T) RTB 19 (3T)
