Visitors Feel the Steel of the Under 10's

There was a symmetrical theme to the fixtures this weekend, RTB Seniors lost to Oakdale friday and Ebbw Vale beat Pontypridd yesterday, and we won't mention the affair at Twickenham!! even though the last 10 minutes evened things up.
However, based on this mornings performances, these other fixtures were the 'starters' before the main event.
RTB Steelers U10's faced two oppononents that ran us close in competetive encounters within the first month of the season.
First up were Oakdale, a team renowned for good ball handling skills. The Steelers soon ensured that the visiting team had no time to settle, tremendous pressure was inserted and the visitors had no time to play expansive rugby. The ability to turn defence into attack at rapid pace ensured that the scoreboard soon rattled in favour of the home side. Good work by Dylan Edwards, Charlie Birch and Maxwell Gregory ensured dominace in the 'tackle' and 'jackle' area, this gave Josh Davies, Dylan Lewis and John Atkinson time to move the ball to gain width. Good support provided by Mason Lewis and Thom Chaffey enhanced the big 'chargers' gaining the momentum and a score of 45 point to 20 in favour of the 'Steelers' was a good reflection of a dominant display, although credit to Oakdale who never gave up and fully participated in a very enertaining game of rugby.
That set up the battle of the valleys, Ebbw v Cynon (RTB Steelers v Pontypridd). Many of the boys have faced each other on numerous occasions previous, as part of club sides and as part of Schools District U11 teams, historically results have gone either way against a team who we have a great relationship with, however on this occassion the attitude and commitment of the Steelers proved too much and by half time the outcome was secured, again the influence of Charlie Birch, Dylan Edwards and Max Gregory dominated the 'floor' area to secure a great deal of the 50/50 ball, and it was great to see the returning Josh Hathway becoming increasingly influential as the game progressed
Fine displays were also provided by Mitch Parker, Johann Francis and the old stalwart Owen Jones in a tremendous 45 points to 15 victory to RTB that was probably the finest display of 2016.
Fine players have represented Ebbw Vale, RTB, Oakdale and Pontypridd sides over the years, however the commitment on display this morning by all three sides brought memories back of the likes of Clive Burgess, Martin Williams,Gethin Jenkins, Paul Young, Mark Dicks and Kingsley Jones.
Fine refereeing from Mark Hathway and Martin Cooke ensured all games were played in tremendous spirit, many thanks to both for doing the most difficult of jobs.
Attention is now turned to the floodlit game v Risca this tuesday at Eugene Cross Park, KO 7:15PM.
